UK creators – no private copying exception without compensation

The UK’s recently implemented exception for private copying has been submitted for judicial review by a group of creators’ organisations. They contest that the UK exception is not in line with the European Copyright Directive.

The application for a judicial review has been launched by The Musicians’ Union, The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, and UK Music.  It is also supported by SAA member, Directors UK.

The judicial review request is based on the absence of compensation for rightholders, something that is clearly stipulated in the European Copyright Directive.  Should the review be successful the organisations hope that the UK law will be rewritten to allow for this compensation.
