The wide-reaching copyright package presented today by the European Commission is met with a mixed reaction by SAA. Beyond these first steps to support authors, SAA calls for greater ambition at EU level for screenwriters and directors.

The last 10 days have seen more light shined on the European Commission’s copyright plans following a series of leaks – an Impact Assessment, a draft Directive, a draft Communication.

The first copyright proposal of the European Commission is a Regulation to enable temporary access to subscription services from your home country while travelling in Europe.

The recent report by Green Pirate MEP Julia Reda really hammers home how the polarisation of the authors’ rights/ copyright debate has made it difficult for creators to talk about the future of their industry.  The latest blog post by Ms Reda asserts as much, too.

The European Parliament now has 4 committees looking at the 2001 copyright Directive.
